Electric Blankets have been around for some time now, but like anything as time goes by they become better and more sophisticated, also of course style and fashion changes. Running costs are of course also an important factor to consider particularly today with heating costs for our homes being so high. Electric blankets could almost be seen as a neccesity rather than a luxury when you consider this factor. As a guide modern electric blankets have a typical wattage (Power consumption) of around 300w for a double size.
To calculate the approximate running cost you can use the following formula
Wattage divided by 1000 x time used in minutes divided by 60 = kWh
kWh x cost in pence = running cost
If the electric blanket was switched on for 75 minutes once you were in bed and you were paying 7p per unit for electricity then the calculation would be as follows 300 divided by 1000 x 75 minutes divided by 60 = 0.375 Kw/h times by 7p = 2.625p. A typical electric heater operates at 2000 watts. To switch on the heater for the same 75 minutes using the same calculation would be 17.5p. Therefore the heater is 6 times more expensive to run and is not directly warming you at night. Electric blankets can save money.
