Jersey Cotton Bed Linen has different qualities to standard cotton bed linen. Cotton itself is of course soft to the touch and warm in winter, cool in summer, it is also hard wearing. Cotton is also preferable to a polyester cotton mix but often people are not aware of what the term Jersey actally means.
To explain this we need to understand how sheets are usually made. Whether 100% cotton or a polyester cotton mix, most sheets are a woven product, as we might remember from our schooldays weaving has a warp and a weft these are threads that go from top to bottom and from side to side. Weaving is one of the standard methods used to manufacture fabrics. One problem with a woven product is that it doesn’t stretch easily, you can usually get it to stretch in one direction but not the other.
A jersey product is different, it is not a woven item, jersey is a knitted product. They are knitted on large machines, the fabric is then made into the sheets. It’s still cotton but because it is knitted it can stretch in all directions.
This has an obvious advantage when used for bedding, because it is much more stretchy you can lie on it and turn over and the fabric just moves with you. This means that there is less chance of the sides popping off during the night.
Jersey Cotton Bed Linen is absolutely ideal for use with memory foam mattresses because as the mattress moulds itself to your shape, the sheet moulds with it, meaning that you still benefit from all the advantages that made you buy the memory foam mattress without your bedding compromising the experience.
